Saves you money
You have likely invested a significant amount of money in your upholstery, so you want to make it last. By keeping it maintained and cleaning it regularly, you’ll need to get it reupholstered or replace it less frequently, saving you money in the long run.
Keeps it comfortable
Looking after your upholstery maintains its function in the long run, which is to give you somewhere comfortable and beautiful to relax and travel in. Even high-quality fabric can show signs of damage if neglected, and no one wants to flop onto a worn out sofa or car seat at the end of a long day.
Maintains the appearance
Keeping your upholstery clean will maintain its appearance, keeping colours bright and textures as they should be. Cleaning also eliminates stains and odour; dirt and grime is even more important if you have pets – prolonged exposure to such pollutants may degrade your upholstery.
Provides a clean, safe and healthy environment
Air quality can be improved by cleaning your upholstery, getting rid of problems such as mould, dust, mildew and allergens. Your soft furnishings are a breeding ground for bacteria, and pathogens and dirt can build up to the point where they can cause health risks. These organisms can be released into the environment each time someone sits down on a sofa or chair.
They’re manufactured with the expectations they’ll need cleaning
There is padding beneath the fabric, which is ready to soak up liquid you may spill at some point. Even if you think it has been removed from the surface, the spillage will likely be embedded deeper in the furniture and could reappear later it its life. This is especially important to note if you have upholstered furniture in yachts.
How
General maintenance
Vacuum – thoroughly vacuum your upholstery regularly, making sure you pay attention to all the nooks and crannies with the crevice attachment on your vacuum. If cleaning leather or vinyl fabric, be sure to use the brush attachment on your vacuum to avoid scratching it.
Stain alert!
Blot … blot … BLOT! – when you spill something on your soft furnishings, you immediately want to use a dry cloth to soak up the excess liquid using a blotting motion. Make sure to check the cleaning instruction on the fabric label, and if its is safe to use water on the fabric, alternate using a damp microfiber towel and a dry towel to blot over the stain. Keep repeating this process until the stain virtually disappears.
With cleaning products, test on a small discreet area
You want to try out the cleaning product first somewhere unnoticeable to check for undesired effects such as the product discolouring the fabric. If the cleaning product appears to cause no damage to your fabric then lightly mist it over the fabric, as over spraying can cause the solution to seep too deep into the desired fabric. Then gently groom the fabric with a soft sponge or brush. Finally, rinse the fabric by lightly spraying with warm water and then use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up the excess moisture. Be sure to allow the upholstery to completely dry before using it.
Know when to hire a professional cleaner
If the all the above fails and you are stuck with a deep-seated stain, the best course of action may be to hire a professional cleaner. Commercial upholstery should also receive a professional deep steam cleaning once or twice a year.
