General maintenance

Vacuum – thoroughly vacuum your upholstery regularly, making sure you pay attention to all the nooks and crannies with the crevice attachment on your vacuum. If cleaning leather or vinyl fabric, be sure to use the brush attachment on your vacuum to avoid scratching it.

Stain alert!

Blot … blot … BLOT! – when you spill something on your soft furnishings, you immediately want to use a dry cloth to soak up the excess liquid using a blotting motion. Make sure to check the cleaning instruction on the fabric label, and if its is safe to use water on the fabric, alternate using a damp microfiber towel and a dry towel to blot over the stain. Keep repeating this process until the stain virtually disappears.

With cleaning products, test on a small discreet area

You want to try out the cleaning product first somewhere unnoticeable to check for undesired effects such as the product discolouring the fabric. If the cleaning product appears to cause no damage to your fabric then lightly mist it over the fabric, as over spraying can cause the solution to seep too deep into the desired fabric. Then gently groom the fabric with a soft sponge or brush. Finally, rinse the fabric by lightly spraying with warm water and then use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up the excess moisture. Be sure to allow the upholstery to completely dry before using it.

Know when to hire a professional cleaner 

If the all the above fails and you are stuck with a deep-seated stain, the best course of action may be to hire a professional cleaner. Commercial upholstery should also receive a professional deep steam cleaning once or twice a year.
